British Columbia is where most machines from Asia first reach Canada, and its manufacturers work in a different mix of sectors from Central Canada: value-added wood, marine fabrication, food processing and a large base of metals and machinery shops. The Province of British Columbia reports that manufacturing sustains about 170,000 jobs, contributes roughly $18 billion a year to GDP (over 6% of provincial output) and accounts for about half of BC's exports. There are nearly 20,000 manufacturing businesses in the province. The province highlights six key industries: wood and paper products, metals and machinery, food and beverage processing, shipbuilding and industrial marine, aerospace, and medical products and biomanufacturing. A Manufacturing Action Plan launched in 2025 focuses on productivity, clean manufacturing, workforce, supply chain resilience and industrial land.

Wood and paper products
Secondary wood manufacturers, cabinet makers and millwork shops rely on beam saws, nesting routers and edge banders. Technical Safety BC and approval marks
Under section 21(1) of BC's Electrical Safety Regulation, electrical equipment must bear evidence of approval. Technical Safety BC's information bulletin on approved marks (May 22, 2024) lists the acceptable forms: the mark of a certification body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada, the label of an accredited inspection body, an approval label issued by Technical Safety BC or another accredited organization, and the SPE-1000 model code field approval label. The bulletin notes that accreditations and marks can change without notice, so the SCC directory is the reference for current bodies.

Freight: close to the port, far from the rest
Machines from Asia usually arrive through the Port of Vancouver or the Port of Prince Rupert. The Prince Rupert Port Authority says its port is 36 hours closer to Shanghai by sea than Vancouver and connects by CN rail to inland markets. For a Lower Mainland plant, the move from a Vancouver terminal is a short truck trip, so the ocean leg is most of the freight plan. Machines from Europe take longer routes, either by sea to the west coast or through an eastern Canadian port and by rail across the country. For the Interior and the North, the last leg runs over mountain highways. Winter conditions on the passes can delay heavy loads, so leave slack in the schedule in the colder months and confirm the carrier's routing. Chillers and water circuits need protection from freezing on the way.
BC is also an active seismic zone. Ask your structural engineer whether machine anchors and foundations need to be designed for seismic loads, particularly for tall machines, automatic loaders and material storage towers.
Support programs
The province lists the BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund and the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program among its supports for manufacturers. Federally, Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan) was accepting applications for an expanded Regional Tariff Response Initiative as of September 2026.
