Nova Scotia's manufacturing looks different from the rest of Canada: tires, ships, plastics and seafood carry more weight here than cars or farm equipment. The province is also the first landfall for many machines shipped from Europe, since Halifax is one of Canada's main Atlantic container ports. The federal Job Bank's Atlantic manufacturing profile (2024 data) counts 35,500 manufacturing workers in Nova Scotia, 43.9% of manufacturing employment in Atlantic Canada and the largest share of any Atlantic province. It notes that plastics and rubber products and transportation equipment are more prevalent in Nova Scotia than elsewhere in the region, and that Michelin is the largest employer.

Plastics and packaging

Plastics processors and food packers can make trays, containers and lids in-house on thermoformers. Marine and heavy fabrication

Shipyard suppliers and structural shops cut and bend plate. Electrical approval in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia's Electrical Code Regulations, made under the Electrical Installation and Inspection Act, are direct. Section 15 states that no corporation, company or person shall sell, display, rent, lease, advertise, install or use any electrical device, appliance or equipment unless it is certified as approved equipment by a certification organization acceptable to the Chief Inspector. The Chief Inspector can also approve the installation and use of equipment in accordance with the Code, order equipment that is a fire or shock hazard disconnected, and direct retailers and suppliers to recall uncertified equipment.

Inspections are carried out by Nova Scotia Power's Inspection Services, which is appointed by the province, and licensed electricians must obtain a wiring permit before starting work. A machine without a recognized Canadian mark needs certification, or a special inspection accepted by the inspection authority, before it is connected. Freight and weather

Halifax is the natural entry port for European machines headed to Nova Scotia plants, and a machine bound for the Halifax region can go from the container terminal to the plant by truck with no rail leg. Machines from Asia often come through west coast ports and cross the country by rail, or arrive by sea at an eastern port. Plants in Cape Breton or on the South Shore add a longer truck leg. Coastal conditions matter on the last leg and in storage:

• Winter storms can close roads and ground cranes, so keep a flexible delivery date for heavy lifts between December and March.
• Salt air is hard on exposed steel, guideways and electronics. Keep machines crated and indoors until the installation area is ready.
• Chillers and water circuits need freeze protection in transit and in unheated storage.
