A paper plate machine presses or folds a flat paperboard blank into a plate, tray, bowl or lunch box using heated moulds, then ejects and counts the finished pieces. Food-service packaging converters and new entrants to disposables buy them because the machines are compact, run on modest power and let the tooling decide the product.
Three machine families
"Paper plate machine" covers three different processes, and each makes a different kind of item. Choose the family from the product first, then the model.
Hydraulic plate presses
A press feeds a blank between heated dies, closes them to form the plate and pushes it out. The Dakiou ZP-D600 is a two-station automatic hydraulic press for round, square and shaped plates; other shapes and sizes come from changing the moulds. Output, board range and utilities for a given plate size are confirmed in the quote.
Formers for PE-coated plates, trays and bowls
These machines shape PE-coated board and seal it with hot air, so the finished piece keeps its shape and the coating faces the food. Win Shine's WS-3301 series is a two-mould former sold in three variants, one per product type: rectangular pieces, round pieces from 5 to 10 in across, and shallow bowls, all on single PE-coated board of 300 to 340 g/m².
Lunch box formers
Box formers fold a die-cut blank into a one-compartment take-out box and seal the corners. The Seehope KH-800 feeds blanks automatically, heats them with a built-in hot air generator, hot-press forms and glues the four corners, then counts and stacks the boxes. The Win Shine WS-1101MA does the same job faster on a narrower size range, sealing the corners with a hot air heater.

How to choose
- Start from the item. Pressed plates, sealed trays and folded boxes come from different machines, so a plant that wants all three needs more than one.
- Tooling. Each size and shape needs its own mould. Start with the few sizes your customers order most, and ask for the cost and lead time of additional moulds to be set out in the quote.
- Board window. Check the machine's range against board your supplier can deliver consistently. A box former specified for 320 to 360 g/m² is not meant for much lighter stock.
- Speed per die. Output depends on the number of dies and the size of the piece. Win Shine gives two speed bands for the WS-3301 series depending on model, and Seehope rates the KH-800 at 25 to 40 per minute with one die.
- Blank supply. Plan where printed, die-cut blanks will come from: your own printing and die cutting, or a converter who supplies them ready to form.
Grease resistance and PFAS
Plates and boxes for oily food need a grease and moisture barrier, which on the machines above is a PE coating. Health Canada lists food packaging among the uses of PFAS, and in 2025 the federal government proposed adding PFAS other than fluoropolymers to Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, with a consultation on the first phase of measures. Ask your board supplier how its grease resistance is achieved and whether the board is free of intentionally added PFAS, and follow updates from Health Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada.
General food-contact rules apply too: section B.23.001 of the Food and Drug Regulations makes the food seller responsible for packaging safety, and pre-market review is voluntary, so customers will expect documentation from you and your board supplier.
What the plant needs
- Floor. Footprints of about 2.6 x 1.15 m to 3.2 x 2.0 m and weights of 1.0 to 1.5 tonnes. Leave room around each machine for blank pallets, finished cartons and mould storage.
- Power. About 5 to 15 kW per machine. The KH-800 is listed for 380 V or 220 V at 50 Hz; Canadian supply is 60 Hz and often 600 V, so confirm motors, heaters and controls with the maker and see 600 V power for imported machines.
- Compressed air. From about 100 L/min to 500 L/min per machine, and Seehope notes that the KH-800 needs a separate air compressor. Add up every machine that runs together and size the compressor and dryer with margin.
Running costs and consumables
- Board, the main cost per piece, or blanks if you buy them pre-cut.
- Moulds for each new size or shape, and cutting dies for the blanks.
- Compressed air. Compare consumption between models, because the compressor runs all shift. Win Shine claims an 80% reduction in compressed air cost on the WS-1101MA compared with its earlier models.
- Heater elements and hot air units, which wear with running hours.
- Packing: sleeves, shrink film and cartons.
Demand and who buys
As of 2026, Canada's single-use plastics regulations prohibit foodservice ware made from polystyrene foam, PVC, carbon black and oxo-degradable plastic, including plates, bowls, clamshells and lidded containers, and the regulations remain in force. Buyers range from new entrants starting with one plate press to converters adding boxes next to a paper cup line for the same caterers, take-out restaurants and institutional kitchens. Questions and answers
What is the difference between a paper plate press and a plate forming machine?
A press shapes a blank between heated dies, the usual method for pressed plates. A former such as the Win Shine WS-3301 series shapes PE-coated board and seals it with hot air to make coated plates, trays and shallow bowls.
What board do paper plates and lunch boxes use?
The formers in our catalog run PE-coated board: 300 to 340 g/m² on the WS-3301 series, 320 to 360 g/m² on the WS-1101MA and 200 to 450 gsm on the Seehope KH-800.
How much compressed air does a paper plate machine need?
It varies widely: about 100 L/min for the WS-1101MA lunch box former, 0.3 to 0.4 m³/min for the KH-800 and about 500 L/min for the WS-3301 series. Size the compressor for every machine running together.
Can one machine make plates, trays and bowls?
Only within its family. Changing moulds changes size and shape, but Win Shine sells a separate WS-3301 series variant for each product type, and folded lunch boxes need a box former.
Do paper plates need approval in Canada?
Health Canada does not require pre-market approval of food packaging, but section B.23.001 of the Food and Drug Regulations makes the seller responsible for its safety. Keep food-contact documentation from your board supplier.
