Agricultural equipment and trailer manufacturing: plant line-up
How Canadian farm implement and trailer builders cut plate, process tube, bend long parts and weld frames, with a starter to high-volume machine line-up.

Farm implement and trailer builders work in heavier plate, longer parts and more structural tube than a typical sheet metal job shop. Their core line-up is a plate cutter (CNC plasma or high-power fiber laser), a long high-tonnage press brake, a tube laser for frames and welding capacity sized for large assemblies, followed by paint and final assembly.
What these manufacturers build
This group covers short-line farm equipment makers (tillage tools, seeders and air carts, hay equipment, grain handling and livestock handling) and builders of flatdeck, livestock, dump and utility trailers, truck bodies and similar vocational equipment. Most build to order in low to medium volumes with many variants: a frame offered in several lengths, with different hitches, axle ratings and customer options.
That pattern shapes the plant. Parts are large, heavy and made from plate, formed channel and structural tube. Weld content is high, and a given frame part may be cut only a few dozen times a year, in several versions. CNC cutting that turns a drawing into a correct part without manual layout is often the largest single productivity gain available.
Where the sector is in Canada
Farm equipment manufacturing has deep roots on the Prairies. The Canadian Encyclopedia notes that most short-line manufacturers are Canadian owned and that many are located in the Prairie region. Agricultural Manufacturers of Canada, the national association for the sector, began as a Prairie manufacturers' association and is headquartered in Winnipeg.
Statistics Canada data published by ISED shows the pattern for 2025. Of 1,554 establishments in agricultural, construction and mining machinery manufacturing (NAICS 3331), Alberta has 435, Saskatchewan 119 and Manitoba 118, together more than Ontario's 503 and well ahead of Quebec's 192. Trailers follow a different map: of 663 establishments in motor vehicle body and trailer manufacturing (NAICS 3362), Ontario has 243 and Quebec 164, followed by British Columbia (90) and Alberta (84).
Process flow in a frame-and-plate plant
- Plate cutting. Brackets, gussets, hitch plates and side panels come off a CNC plasma table, an oxy-fuel torch for the thickest plate, or a high-power fiber laser for sheet and medium plate. Bevel heads prepare weld joints in the same pass.

- Forming. Long press brakes form side rails, fenders, hopper panels and channel. Parts longer than one machine are bent on two brakes working in tandem.

- Blasting, painting and assembly. Frames are blasted and painted, then fitted with axles, hydraulics, wiring, lights and decals.

Compliance that reaches the shop floor
Trailer builders carry an extra obligation. Transport Canada requires vehicles manufactured in Canada for the Canadian market to comply with the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS). Manufacturers of prescribed vehicle classes sold across provincial boundaries must also be authorized to apply the National Safety Mark, a maple leaf logo carrying a number unique to the manufacturer, and authorization depends on showing that you can certify your production. What to plan for
Floors and lifting
Heavy plate tables and high-tonnage brakes need suitable foundations, and some brakes need a pit. Power and gas
High-power lasers, large plasma systems and oxy-fuel cutting bring heavy electrical loads and gas needs (oxygen, fuel gas, nitrogen). Plan the 600 V service, gas storage and ventilation with your electrician and gas supplier before the machine order is placed.
People
Welders and fitters remain the largest group on the floor. The new roles are CNC programmers for the plate and tube cutters, and a maintenance person comfortable with hydraulics and laser optics.
