Open vs enclosed fiber laser: safety, fumes, space and cost

Open gantry or fully enclosed fiber laser? Compare laser safety class, fume capture, exchange tables, floor space and the real cost drivers of each.

Verdict: an open fiber laser suits small shops and plate cutters that need a lower machine cost, a compact footprint and loading from three sides, and that can fence off and supervise the cutting area. An enclosed fiber laser suits production shops, shared floors and higher-power work, because it keeps the beam, sparks and fumes inside the machine.

Both designs use the same kind of fiber source and cut the same materials. What changes is where the protection sits: in the machine, or in your building and your procedures. That choice affects laser safety, fume capture, loading, floor space and the total installed cost.

What "open" and "enclosed" mean

An open machine is a gantry over a cutting bed with no cabin around the work zone. Senfeng describes its SF3015NP as open-style with no top cover, a single platform, and loading and unloading from the left, right and rear. Very large plate cutters are usually open as well: the Han's Laser G13025S PRO-A has an open bed with a working area of 13.1 x 2.6 m, where a full cabin would be a building of its own.

An enclosed machine surrounds the cutting area with a cabin, viewing windows rated for the laser wavelength and doors that stop the laser when opened. Han's Laser specifies OD6 laser safety glass and an automatic safety door on its G4020F Master, and TRUMPF describes an enclosed protective housing and beam guard on the TruLaser 1030 fiber. Most enclosed sheet lasers pair the cabin with an exchange table.

Laser safety class: what actually changes

The fiber source in a cutting machine is a high-power laser. Health Canada defines a Class 4 laser as hazardous to the eye or skin from a direct, reflected or scattered beam, and a Class 1 product as not hazardous during normal use due to low emission level or product design. That last phrase matters: a machine with a Class 4 source inside can be classified Class 1 when its enclosure and interlocks prevent access to the beam in normal use. BLM Group, for example, lists its LT14 FIBER tube laser as a Class 1 laser system.

An open machine leaves the Class 4 hazard in the room, so the protection moves to the workplace: a restricted area, barriers, eyewear chosen for the wavelength, written procedures and training. Provincial rules apply here. In British Columbia, WorkSafeBC states that a worksite with a Class 3B or Class 4 laser needs a laser safety program and a trained laser safety officer. CCOHS lists the engineering controls to look for, such as protective housings, fail-safe interlocks, master switches and beam stops. Check the rules in your own province with your regulator.

Two practical points before you buy:

  • "Enclosed" does not automatically mean Class 1. Ask for the classification on the product label and in the manual, not the brochure.
  • Federal rules changed recently. As of 2026, Health Canada's Radiation Emitting Devices Regulations for laser products, in force since October 9, 2025, set safety requirements for lasers imported, sold or leased in Canada. Ask the supplier to confirm the machine's compliance documentation, and confirm details with Health Canada or your broker.

Fume and spark capture

Laser cutting vaporizes part of the material, and CCOHS notes that fumes emitted from materials exposed to laser beams must be addressed. Enclosed machines contain the plume and pull it down through zoned extraction under the bed. Senfeng describes a partitioned negative-pressure system on its SF3015H4 that switches the active outlet to follow the cutting position; Gweike and Han's Laser describe partitioned or zoned exhaust on their enclosed models.

Open machines rely on under-bed extraction alone. Senfeng fits double ventilating ducts to its open NP series and says it achieves favourable dust removal. Even so, with no cabin, anything the downdraft misses goes into the building, so size the extractor and make-up air with more margin, and pay more attention to galvanized, painted or oily stock. Exchange tables and throughput

On a single-platform machine, cutting stops while the operator unloads parts and loads the next sheet. An exchange table loads one pallet while the other is under the head, then swaps them. Gweike quotes a 15 second exchange on its LF3015GA, and Senfeng quotes 20 seconds on the SF3015H4. For a job shop cutting one-off parts, the single table and open access may be enough. For repeat production, the exchange table often matters more than the enclosure itself.

Open beds have their own loading advantage: heavy plate can be craned or forked straight onto the bed from several sides, which is why long plate machines stay open.

Floor space and installation

Footprint figures differ by manufacturer and by what is included, but the pattern is clear for a 3 x 1.5 m (10 x 5 ft) sheet size:

  • Senfeng says its open SF3015NP needs only about 12 m² of floor, thanks to the single platform and built-in source.
  • Gweike lists the enclosed LF3015GA with exchange table at 8580 x 2850 x 2300 mm overall.
  • TRUMPF lists the TruLaser 1030 fiber at 9333 x 5990 mm.

Add clearance for service, the chiller, the extraction unit, gas supply and a path for material handling. Freight follows the same logic: Senfeng states that up to six SF3015NP machines fit in one 40 ft high-cube container, while an enclosed machine with its cabin and exchange table takes far more space. Where the money goes

Without quoting prices, the cost comparison is about where the safety and extraction spending lands:

  • Enclosed: cabin panels, laser-rated windows, interlocked doors, the exchange table and its drive, zoned extraction, plus larger freight and rigging.
  • Open: a lower machine cost, but budget for perimeter guarding or laser curtains, access control, wavelength-specific eyewear, a stronger extraction system and the time to run a laser safety program.

Which suits which shop

  • Open: small shops with a dedicated, controllable cutting bay; lower-volume job work; heavy plate loaded by crane; very long beds.
  • Enclosed: production sheet work, shared floors where other trades work nearby, reflective metals, lights-out or automated loading, and shops that want the laser hazard handled by the machine.

Questions and answers

Is an open fiber laser safe to use?

It can be, but the Class 4 beam and its reflections remain accessible during cutting, so it needs workplace controls such as a restricted area, wavelength-specific eyewear, procedures and training. In British Columbia, WorkSafeBC requires a laser safety program and a trained laser safety officer for Class 3B and Class 4 lasers.

What laser class is an enclosed fiber laser cutter?

The source inside is Class 4, but a machine can be classified Class 1 when its enclosure and interlocks prevent access to the beam during normal use. Confirm the class on the product label and in the manual.

Does an enclosed fiber laser still need fume extraction?
