Sign and display manufacturing: shop workflow and machine line-up
How Canadian sign and display shops route, cut, weld and wire letters and cabinets, what electric sign certification involves, and a line-up by stage.

Sign and display shops cut and assemble acrylic, PVC foam, aluminum composite, aluminum and wood into letters, sign cabinets, panels and retail fixtures. The workhorse is a large-format CNC router; metal-heavy shops add a fiber laser and a handheld laser welder. Illuminated signs must also be certified as finished units under Canadian electrical rules.
What sign and display shops produce
The product range is wide: channel and dimensional letters, sign cabinets and pylons, routed panels, wayfinding and room signs, point-of-purchase displays, trade show exhibits and retail fixtures. The Sign Association of Canada groups producers as imagemakers (print, commercial signage, point-of-purchase and illuminated displays) alongside installers and maintainers, and many shops do all of it: design, build, install and service.
That mix makes a sign shop different from other fabricators. Almost every order is a one-off or a short run tied to a location and a brand, materials change from job to job, and a large share of the value sits in design, proofs and installation. Machines are chosen for flexibility across materials more than for speed on one part.
What drives the work
Orders follow new store openings and rebrands, commercial and institutional construction, and wayfinding programs for campuses, hospitals and transit. Rebrands are especially valuable because one client decision can mean dozens of identical sign sets across a region, which is where a second router or a faster laser starts to pay. Service and maintenance of installed illuminated signs add steady work between projects.
The sign shop workflow
- Survey, design and permits. Site measurements, shop drawings and customer proofs come first, along with the municipal sign permit where one is required.
- Graphics. Large-format printing, vinyl cutting and lamination, on equipment outside our current catalog.
- Routing. A CNC router cuts faces, letters, backers and routed panels from acrylic, PVC foam, aluminum composite, high-density urethane and wood. A tool changer and a zoned vacuum table cut the time between jobs.
- Metal work. A fiber laser cuts aluminum and steel letters, faces and brackets. Fiber lasers are built for metal, so plastics and wood stay on the router or go to a CO2 laser, as explained in our fiber laser vs CO2 laser comparison. Returns and cabinets are formed, then welded; handheld laser welders join thin aluminum and stainless and can also clean surfaces before paint.
- Electrical. LED modules, power supplies and wiring are installed in the shop.
- Certification, delivery and installation. The finished sign is labelled, shipped and installed by a licensed crew.
Electric signs in Canada: build to the standard
The Sign Association of Canada's guidance is direct: electric signs must be manufactured to the fabrication standard CSA C22.2 No. 207, and a finished sign must be evaluated and labelled in its complete, final form. Using certified components is not enough on its own. The standard covers portable and stationary electric signs and displays, and its current edition includes LED light sources and retrofit kits. Installation must meet the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, and on-site installation or repair requires electrical permits and personnel licensed by the provincial or municipal authority.
For the shop, that means a repeatable build process, consistent wiring practice and records for each sign. Ask your certification body which evaluation route suits your volume before the first illuminated job. In Quebec, the Charter of the French language also governs the language used on commercial signs, so confirm wording requirements with the Office québécois de la langue française before production.

What to plan for
Space and doors
Plan the building around the largest sign that has to leave it. Pylon cabinets and long fascia signs need assembly space, a paint area and a door big enough to load them. A large-format router also needs clear room on all loading sides, and a configurable-length machine sets the minimum room length.
Extraction
Routing plastics and MDF produces chips and fine dust, so the router needs a collector matched to its spindle and hood. Laser cutting adds fumes; our guide to laser cutting fume extraction and safety covers filtration and ventilation.
Utilities
Vacuum pumps for the router table, compressed air, and a 600 V three-phase supply for the larger machines are the usual needs. Transformer and CSA requirements for each machine are confirmed in the quote.
People

Questions and answers
What CNC router size does a sign shop need?
Match the bed to the sheets you buy, usually 1.2 x 2.4 m (4 x 8 ft) or 1.5 x 3 m (5 x 10 ft). Shops that make long fascia signs or panels choose a longer bed, and some large-format routers are configurable in length.
Can a fiber laser cut acrylic for signs?
Fiber lasers are built for metal. Acrylic, PVC foam and wood are normally routed on a CNC router or cut on a CO2 laser, while the fiber laser handles aluminum and steel letters, faces and brackets.
Do illuminated signs need certification in Canada?
Yes. Electric signs must be manufactured to CSA C22.2 No. 207 and evaluated and labelled in their complete, final form, because component approvals do not cover the finished sign. Installation must meet the Canadian Electrical Code and needs electrical permits.
Are handheld laser welders useful in a sign shop?
They are an option for thin aluminum and stainless returns, cabinets and brackets. Some models, such as the xTool MetalFab, also cut and clean metal, which suits the mixed work of a sign shop.
