Single wall vs double wall cup machines: what changes on the line

Single wall, double wall and ripple paper cups compared: board and PE, PLA or aqueous coatings, what each needs from the machines, speeds and cost drivers.

A single wall cup is formed from one coated board blank on one cup machine. A double wall cup takes that finished cup and bonds a second paper wall around it, leaving an insulating air gap; a ripple cup does the same with a fluted or embossed outer wall. Double wall and ripple production usually adds a second machine.

The three cup types

Single wall cups have one coated sidewall and a bottom disc. The board is heavier than most packaging paper: the Ruida RD-230A is listed for 170 to 350 g/m² and the Win Shine WS-PCA for 240 to 360 g/m². Single wall cups serve cold drinks, water, ice cream and hot drinks, where many cafés add a separate sleeve.

Double wall cups add a smooth outer paper wall. Ruida describes the principle as air insulation: an inner cup and an outer cup with air between them, so the outside stays comfortable to hold. The Mingguo MG-HC800 uses 150 to 350 g/m² PE-coated paper for that outer wall.

Ripple cups replace the smooth outer wall with a fluted, corrugated or embossed one. Ruida's double wall range lists hollow, ripple and embossed designs, and PMC's OW 2001S overwrap machine can wrap label stock or micro flute material around paper or plastic containers.

Coatings: PE, PLA and aqueous

The coating does two jobs: it holds the liquid and it forms the heat seal on the side seam and bottom. Your coating choice shapes machine settings as much as the cup design.

  • PE (polyethylene). The long-standing standard. PMC lists solid bleached board with PE on both sides as standard for its 1003 former, with PE on one side as an option for some products. A PaperIndex review describes PE as sealing within well-understood temperature ranges, although each supplier's grade and coat weight shift the window.
  • PLA (polylactic acid). The same review finds PLA sealing more sensitive to temperature and dwell time than PE, and notes that a compostable claim applies to the certified finished cup, not the coating alone.
  • Aqueous (water-based) coatings. Some are heat-sealable and some need adhesive or a mechanical closure. Recyclability depends on the formulation and the test method, so it is not automatic.

On the machine side, Ruida lists single or double PE, PLA and non-plastic coated paper for the RD-230A, and Win Shine offers hot air or ultrasonic sealing on the WS-PCA. Ask for trials that cover forming, sealing, rim curl, cracking at scores and filling, not just flat-sheet data, and repeat them for cold drinks, where condensation softens the sidewall.

What changes on the machines

Single wall formers

A single wall former cuts or receives a printed sidewall blank, wraps and seals it on a mandrel, punches and seals the bottom, then knurls and curls the rim. Speed and utilities scale together. The Win Shine WS-PCA runs up to 60 cups per minute on about 10 to 12 kW. The Ruida RD-230A runs 220 to 260 cups per minute with 55 kW installed (26 kW working) and weighs 7,500 kg. The PMC 1003 reaches 330 pieces per minute and PMC's brochure lists 100 kVA, 135 ft³/min of air at 90 psi, vacuum and cooling water for it.

Sleeve and overwrap machines

The second machine takes formed cups and adds the outer wall. On the MG-HC800 a servo cup-drop unit feeds the inner cups, the outer wall is wrapped and bonded, and a robot arm picks off the finished cups. Mingguo says it can be connected to the inner cup machine, and it runs on about 8 kW average with 0.4 MPa air. PMC's OW 2001S is fully servo-driven, wraps round or non-round containers, and takes paperboard in blank or web form, virgin or recycled.

The outer wall needs its own printed blanks or web, so double wall and ripple cups add a second material stream, a second set of print files and a second set of size tooling. Mingguo lists exchangeable moulds for sizes on the MG-HC800. Ask the builder how the outer wall is bonded, since the Mingguo page does not state it.

Balancing the line

Speeds rarely match. A former near 230 cups per minute feeding a sleeve machine rated at 90 to 120 would need roughly two sleeve machines to convert its full output into double wall cups. Many plants avoid that by running the former part of the time on single wall cups for cold drinks and the rest on inner cups for double wall. Plan the split before choosing machine sizes.

Cost drivers and plant needs

  • Board. Double wall and ripple cups use two walls of material per cup, so board cost per cup is higher than single wall.
  • Tooling. Each cup size needs its own tooling on the former and on the sleeve machine.
  • Utilities. High-speed formers need large electrical and compressed air supply; add the sleeve machine's own air and power. Imported lines are often wired for 380 V; see our 600 V power guide.
  • Floor and labour. A second machine adds footprint, a cup transfer and often a person for packing.
  • Scrap. Blank skeletons, start-up cups and seal failures, which rise when a new coating is introduced.

Canadian rules in brief

As of 2026 the federal Single-use Plastics Prohibition Regulations remain in force after the Federal Court of Appeal upheld their legal basis in January 2026. Their foodservice ware category covers cups, containers and similar items only when they contain expanded or extruded polystyrene foam, PVC, carbon-black plastic or oxo-degradable plastic. PE-lined paper cups are not in that category, while polystyrene foam hot cups are, which is one reason insulated paper cups matter to foodservice buyers. Which to choose

  • Start with single wall if you serve cold drink, water, ice cream or sleeve-using coffee customers, or if floor space and budget allow only one machine.
  • Add a sleeve or overwrap machine once you have coffee and tea customers who want an insulated cup without a sleeve.
  • Offer ripple where buyers want grip and a premium look, and confirm the tooling and wrap material with the builder.
  • Fix the coating early, because PE, PLA and aqueous boards can need different sealing settings and trials.

Questions and answers

Can a single wall cup machine make double wall cups?

Not on its own. A double wall cup needs a second machine, such as the Mingguo MG-HC800 sleeve machine, that takes formed inner cups and bonds an outer paper wall around them.

What is a ripple cup?

A ripple cup is a double wall cup whose outer wall is fluted, corrugated or embossed instead of smooth. The ridges trap air for insulation and give a textured grip.

Which coating is easiest to run on a paper cup machine?

PE-coated board has the most familiar sealing window. PLA is more sensitive to sealing temperature and dwell time, and some aqueous coatings are not heat-sealable and need adhesive, so trial each board on your machine.

Are paper cups banned under Canada's single-use plastics rules?

No. As of 2026 the foodservice ware category only covers items containing polystyrene foam, PVC, carbon-black plastic or oxo-degradable plastic, so PE-lined paper cups are outside it. Confirm current rules with Environment and Climate Change Canada.
