Industrial machine supplier for Ontario manufacturers

Ontario is Canada's largest manufacturing province, and it has two rules that regularly catch imported machine projects late: every electrical product must be approved under the Electrical Safety Authority's product regulation, and many new or modified machines in a factory need a pre-start health and safety review before workers use them. Ontario's manufacturing base

Statistics Canada reported Ontario manufacturing sales of $31.4 billion in March 2026, the second monthly gain in a row, after $31.5 billion in September 2025. The automotive sector anchors much of that activity. Invest Ontario lists five major vehicle assemblers in the province (Ford, General Motors, Honda, Stellantis and Toyota), more than 1.2 million vehicles built in 2025 and about 92,000 workers directly employed in the auto sector.

Behind the assembly plants are stampers, tube benders, welders and fabricators, and that is where most of our catalog fits:

• Tube and profile work for frames, seating and racking: bundle-loaded tube lasers such as the Trumpf TruLaser Tube 5000 fiber, for tube and profiles up to 180 mm.
• Repeat welded assemblies: robotic laser welding cells like the Amada FLW-3000ENSISe M3, with a 6-axis robot on a 3 m linear carriage and a turn-and-tilt positioner.
• Large sheet and long parts: 6.2 x 2.5 m lasers such as the Bystronic ByStar Fiber 6225, and heavy press brakes up to the LVD PPEB 640/61 (700 US ton, 240 in).
• Signs, plastics and panels: the AXYZ INFINITE 4000 router, from a manufacturer whose Canadian headquarters and manufacturing site is in Waterdown, Ontario.

ESA approval of electrical equipment

The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) administers Ontario Regulation 438/07, and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires approval for electrical products sold or used in Ontario (Rules 2-022 and 2-024). A machine is approved in one of two ways: it carries the mark of a certification body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), or it is field evaluated by an FE agency, which Regulation 438/07 defines as an inspection body accredited under the Standards Council of Canada Act and recognized by ESA. Field evaluation follows CSA SPE-1000.

ESA's guidelines for field evaluation agencies (ESA-SPEC-008, reaffirmed July 4, 2022) add details that matter to machine buyers:

• Labels must be applied by the FE agency's own staff, and the evaluation includes an on-site check where equipment is reassembled on site.
• Field evaluation can cover a process, meaning a group of machines forming part of a production line, identified on a master label.
• Wiring run on, through or under the building needs a notification of work filed with ESA under Rule 2-004, and that wiring cannot be included in the field evaluation.

ESA's exceptions, such as trade show display with its permission or equipment intended solely for use outside Ontario, do not help a production installation. Our guide to CSA certification for imported machinery explains how to plan certification or field evaluation.

Pre-start health and safety reviews

Section 7 of Regulation 851 (Industrial Establishments) under the Occupational Health and Safety Act can require a pre-start health and safety review (PSR) before an apparatus, structure, protective element or process is used in a factory. It applies to new installations and to modifications that change the original design or installation parameters. Ontario's guideline describes a protective element as a shield, a guard, an operating control acting as a guard, a locking device or any other device preventing access, so safety light curtains on a press brake or interlocked doors on a laser enclosure are the kind of feature that brings a machine into question.

The PSR is the employer's obligation, and the Ontario guideline is written for the person carrying it out, such as an engineer. A supplier's part is to get the reviewer what they need early: the manufacturer's safety documentation, the safety circuit drawings and the planned layout. Build the review into the schedule between installation and first production rather than discovering it at handover.

Freight and the reduced load period

Machines from Europe usually cross the Atlantic to Montreal or Halifax and reach southern Ontario by rail or truck; machines from Asia arrive through west coast ports and travel east by rail, or through eastern ports. Ontario enforces reduced load restrictions on trucks during the spring thaw under the Highway Traffic Act. According to Ontario 511, they apply in March and April in southern Ontario and in March, April and May in northern Ontario, and annual and project overweight permits are not valid on any highway during those periods unless the permit says otherwise. Heavy press brakes and large plate machines often travel as overweight loads, so book them outside the thaw window and check 511 for current restrictions.
