An edge bander is a machine that glues a strip of PVC, ABS, veneer or solid wood onto the cut edge of a panel, then trims, rounds and cleans it as the panel feeds through. Cabinet, furniture, closet and store fixture shops use one to turn sawn or nested parts into finished components without hand trimming.
How an edge bander works
The panel rides on a feed chain or track under a top pressure beam that holds it flat, and passes a fixed row of stations at constant speed. The operator sets panel and edge thickness; the stations do the rest. The order of stations is much the same on every make, but the detail of each unit is what separates an entry machine from a production one. Main types of edge bander
Compact single-sided banders
Compact machines fit premilling, gluing and trimming into a frame of about 4 m. The Felder G 383 is the top model of Felder's G 300 series, with premilling and corner rounding as standard, edges from 0.4 to 5 mm, workpieces from 10 to 50 mm thick, an installation length of 11 ft 9 3/4 in and a single-phase 230 V version. The HOLZ-HER STREAMER 1054 C is 3.96 m long, feeds at 10 m/min and takes workpieces up to 60 mm and edges up to 8 mm with optional packages. Corner rounding sits on the larger STREAMER 1057 models rather than the 1054, so check which finishing units a compact model really carries before comparing prices.
Automatic banders for small and mid-size plants
The SCM olimpic 500 feeds at 12 m/min, takes edges from 0.3 to 6 mm and panels from 8 to 60 mm, and is 4,300 or 4,950 mm long depending on the composition. It loads edges automatically from outside the guard, comes in pneumatic and electronic versions, and offers a nesting kit for parts that come off a nesting router plus a panel return device so one operator can feed and unload.
Production banders with servo setup
The HOMAG EDGETEQ S-300 is aimed at shops that have outgrown an entry machine. It feeds at 8 to 14 m/min, takes edges from 0.3 to 8 mm and panels from 8 to 60 mm, and its trimming and scraping units adjust automatically between thick and thin edges. HOMAG describes its glue system as built for easy changes of glue colour and type between EVA and PUR, with Quickmelt for glue on demand.
Zero-joint edging
Zero-joint machines bond edge bands that carry their own functional layer instead of a separate glue. On HOMAG's airTec system, compressed hot air reactivates that layer and leaves no visible glue line; HOMAG positions airTec as a lower investment than its laser system and a fit for shorter runs. HOLZ-HER takes another route with thin-film PUR application, which it says gives waterproof, heat-resistant joints that look comparable to industrial laser edges. Both matter most on white, light and high-gloss edges, where a glue line shows first.

Glue handling in daily use
The Felder glue pot holds 1.2 kg, heats up in 12 minutes and covers about 250 linear metres of 19 mm panel per fill, which shows how often a small shop will refill. HOLZ-HER quotes 3 minutes each for heat-up, glue change and cleaning on the STREAMER 1054 C and lets the operator switch between EVA and PUR quickly. If you band kitchen and bathroom parts in PUR and everything else in EVA, fast changeover saves more time than a higher feed speed. Follow the adhesive maker's data sheet on minimum panel and room temperature, which matters in a Canadian winter when panels arrive from an unheated truck or warehouse.
Corner rounding and profile changeover
Corner rounding removes the hand work on the front and rear corners of thicker edges. If you run several edge thicknesses or radii in one day, look at automatic profile changeover (HOMAG) or two-radius tooling (SCM Multiedge); otherwise each change means stopping to move or swap units.
What your shop needs
- Power. Felder offers the G 383 in single-phase 230 V; automatic production banders run on three-phase power. Check your voltage against our guide to 600 V power for imported machines.
- Compressed air. Pneumatic units, edge feeders and clamping use shop air, so supply clean, dry air at the pressure the maker specifies.
- Extraction. Premilling, trimming and scraping units have their own extraction ports and throw fine wood and plastic chips. CCOHS notes that wood dust is classed as a carcinogen and recommends extraction at the tool.
- Floor. Machine length plus infeed and outfeed at least as long as your longest panel, and a way to bring parts back to the operator.
Running costs and consumables
- Edge band stock. Coils and strips in every colour and thickness you offer; fewer thicknesses also mean fewer setups.
- Glue. EVA granulate or PUR cartridges, plus purge and cleaning material for PUR.
- Cutters and blades. Diamond premilling cutters and trimming cutters need resharpening; end trimming blades, scraper knives and buffing wheels wear too.
- Energy and heat-up. The glue unit heats before the first panel and keeps heating through breaks.
- Changeover time. Every colour, glue or thickness change is lost production, which is where cartridge systems and automatic profiles pay back.
Who buys edge banders
Almost every shop that cuts panels ends up with one: frameless cabinet makers, closet and office furniture builders, store fixture and millwork shops.
